KATHMANDU: The death toll from the devastating flash floods in Nepal rose to 1,252 on Thursday, as rescue teams recovered more bodies from affected areas while 4,875 people remain missing, police said.
According to data released by Nepal Police, 355 bodies were recovered from Chitawan district, 218 from Nawalparasi East, 208 from Nawalparasi West and 177 from Nuwakot.
Of the bodies counted in Nawalparasi West, 18 were recovered from India and later handed over to authorities in the district, police said.
The other recoveries include 127 bodies from Rasuwa, 69 from Gorkha, 60 from Dhading and 38 from Tahanu.
Joint rescue teams led by the Nepal Army continued search and rescue operations for the ninth consecutive day on Thursday, with thousands of people still unaccounted for.
The flash floods were triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, causing widespread destruction across towns and villages in northern and central Nepal.
The disaster has left large areas devastated, with rescue agencies continuing efforts to locate missing people and recover bodies from difficult terrain and flood-hit settlements.
