KATRA: What began as a routine health camp in Thial has turned into a powerful story of transformation, with vision restored and hope renewed for families who once believed treatment was beyond their reach.
Thial, a historic village in the Majalta tehsil of Udhampur, witnessed a mega health camp on March 14 organised in association with Shri Durga Dass Sharma Memorial Society. The camp saw an overwhelming response, with over 1,000 patients screened. Among them, more than 70 individuals were identified with cataracts — a treatable condition that often goes unaddressed due to lack of access and affordability.
Acting swiftly, patients were referred to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital. In a remarkable effort, the first batch of 18 patients underwent successful cataract surgeries within 24 hours, marking 18 lives changed and 18 new beginnings.
For these patients, the surgery meant more than restored vision — it brought back independence and dignity. The procedures were performed by Dr. Malvika Sharma, Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, with support from Dr. Kritika.
All patients are being treated under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, ensuring cashless care. The hospital also provided complete support, including accommodation, meals and transportation for patients and their attendants, removing barriers to treatment.
The initiative highlights the commitment of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board towards accessible healthcare. Through continued outreach, the Board has enabled patients from remote areas to benefit from advanced medical services.
Dr. Yashpal Sharma, Executive Director of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence, said, “For many of these patients, timely treatment was never within reach. Initiatives like these ensure that no one is denied care due to financial or geographical limitations.”
With more patients scheduled for treatment in the coming days, the initiative stands as a strong example of how timely intervention and collective effort can transform lives, as Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital continues its mission to make advanced healthcare accessible to those who need it most.
