JAMMU: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah made a cryptic post on X on Tuesday night that set off speculation on what it he may be referring to.
Comments under his post threw up theories such as possible restoration of statehood for J&K. There is no official word on that, nor did Omar Abdullah say anything on the subject.
His post, in fact, carried only a meme, featuring the character Snape from the Harry Potter universe, and a ‘peeking eye’ emoji.
“Please I can’t take anymore of this,” says Snape in the meme.
Jammu and Kashmir was made a union territory, with Ladakh hived off as another UT, after its statehood and special constitutional status were taken away by the BJP-led NDA government through acts of Parliament in August 2019.
The government did promise to restore statehood eventually.
Unlike Ladakh, the UT of J&K has an assembly, and elections were held late last year, in which Omar Abdullah’s National Conference won.
There is now renewed speculation on plans to restore the statehood — the matter was heard in the Supreme Court too — but so far the central government has not said when it will move towards it.
