JAMMU: In a first for the region, the Mughal Road has been cleared of snow before the end of winter, officials confirmed on Friday.
The operation was carried out by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), marking a major milestone in winter road management for the area.
According to an Army spokesperson, teams from Project Sampark handled snow clearance from Bufliaz to Peer Ki Gali, while Project Beacon managed the stretch from Shopian to Peer Ki Gali.
During the reopening, V K Rajawat, Director General of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), visited Peer Ki Gali along with officials from Project Sampark and Beacon. He praised the teams for their tireless efforts in extreme weather conditions and also reviewed progress on the widening work of NH-701A. Additionally, he assessed ongoing work on NH-144A, directing authorities to expedite construction for early completion.
While the Mughal Road is now declared traffic-worthy, officials warned that snow still remains on adjoining slopes at certain vulnerable locations, with the risk of avalanches in some areas. Commuters have been advised to exercise caution and follow traffic advisories issued by the Poonch and Shopian district administrations. Authorities also noted that road movement may be regulated depending on weather and safety assessments.
