KATHUA: The Kathua Police have disengaged a Special Police Officer (SPO) from service with immediate effect after a viral video purportedly showed him demanding and accepting a ₹100 bribe from a truck driver while deployed on naka-checking duty at Lakhanpur.
According to Order No. 768 of 2026, issued by the District Police Headquarters Kathua on September 28, SPO Ameer-Ul-Din, No. 582/SPO of Police Station Lakhanpur, was found to be clearly visible in the viral video allegedly demanding and accepting the money from an unidentified truck driver.
The order said the alleged misconduct constituted a serious violation of discipline and tarnished the image of the police department. Acting on the recommendations of the Deputy Superintendent of Police, DAR/DPL Kathua, the Senior Superintendent of Police, Kathua, ordered the SPO’s immediate disengagement from service. He has also been directed to deposit all uniform articles, arms and ammunition issued to him.
The action follows a Daily Diary Report (DDR) registered at Police Station Lakhanpur after the video surfaced on social media. The order stated that the personnel had been deployed for naka-checking duty at the Truck Terminal Point, Lakhanpur, on September 27.
A departmental inquiry has also been ordered against Head Constable Dhruv Singh, ASI Gian Chand and Sergeant Shamsher Singh for alleged dereliction of duty and failure to report the alleged misconduct to senior officers.
The inquiry has been entrusted to the SP (Operations), Border and Kandi, Kathua, who has been directed to conduct proceedings under Rules 357 and 359 of the J&K Police Manual and submit findings along with specific recommendations.
The police action comes days after a video showing the alleged bribe demand at the Lakhanpur checkpoint triggered widespread reaction on social media.
