Israel on Saturday launched what it described as a preventive missile strike against Iran, with massive explosions reported across the capital, Tehran, amid soaring regional tensions.
According to Reuters, several missiles struck University Street and the Jomhouri area, while thick smoke was seen rising from near Pasteur Street in downtown Tehran.
The escalation comes against the backdrop of heightened friction between the United States and Iran over the nuclear deal, along with fears of a possible US strike.
Israel’s military said air raid sirens were sounded across parts of the country to prepare for potential retaliatory missile launches. Authorities also announced a prohibition on educational activities, public gatherings, and workplace operations following what the defence minister termed a pre-emptive attack. Essential services remain exempt.
