The Embassy of India in Iran on Monday issued a fresh advisory urging Indian nationals to leave Iran through available means, including commercial flights, in view of the evolving security situation and ongoing nationwide anti-government protests.
In an official statement, the Embassy said the advisory follows earlier notices issued on January 5 and reiterated on January 14, 2026. It advised Indian students, pilgrims, businesspersons and tourists currently in Iran to depart at the earliest.
The Embassy also urged all Indian citizens and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) in Iran to exercise caution, avoid areas witnessing protests or demonstrations, remain in close contact with the mission, and regularly monitor local media for updates. Nationals have been advised to keep their passports and other identification documents readily accessible at all times.
The development comes amid renewed unrest across Iran, particularly in the capital, Tehran, where thousands of students resumed anti-government protests as universities reopened after a month of deadly nationwide turmoil. According to Al Jazeera, demonstrations were reported at several leading institutions, including the University of Tehran, Sharif University of Technology, Amirkabir University of Technology, and Shahid Beheshti University.
Reports indicate that scuffles broke out between anti-establishment students and those supporting Iran’s theocratic system, some of whom were allegedly linked to the Basij, a paramilitary group operating under the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Heavily armed security personnel were deployed in areas surrounding the campuses.
The protests follow earlier violent crackdowns in January, during which authorities reportedly imposed a nationwide communications blackout. Al Jazeera reported that thousands were killed during the unrest, particularly on the nights of January 8 and 9. Tens of thousands of people — including schoolchildren and university students — have reportedly been detained, though Iranian authorities have not released comprehensive figures.
The Embassy assured that assistance would be provided to Indian nationals facing difficulties. It also urged those who have not yet registered with the mission to do so through the designated online portal. In case of internet disruptions in Iran, families in India have been requested to complete the registration on their behalf.
