SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday flagged off the third edition of the Kashmir Marathon in Srinagar, drawing more than 1,800 athletes from across India and abroad.
The marathon has emerged as one of the country’s premier athletics events, combining competitive sport with an opportunity to showcase Kashmir’s scenic landscape. This year’s edition offers a total prize pool of Rs 3.17 crore, with the winner in the open category set to receive Rs 25 lakh, officials said.
In a significant move to promote local sporting talent, the organisers have introduced a separate prize category for runners from Jammu and Kashmir. The initiative aims to encourage greater participation in long-distance running and provide regional athletes with opportunities to compete alongside national and international participants.
The marathon route passes through some of Srinagar’s most prominent locations, including stretches along Dal Lake, Boulevard Road and Nishat Garden, offering participants a distinctive running experience against the backdrop of the Valley’s natural beauty.
Organisers said the event aims to establish itself as a regular fixture on India’s sporting calendar while strengthening Kashmir’s profile as a destination for major sporting events.
Abdullah, who participated in the first two editions of the marathon, did not take part as a runner this year but flagged off the event.
