SRINAGAR: The first batch of Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra pilgrims on Friday morning departed from the twin base camps of Baltal and Pahalgam, marking the commencement of the 57-day annual pilgrimage to the holy cave shrine in the south Kashmir Himalayas.
Amid chants of “Bam Bam Bhole”, pilgrims began their journey after security forces and the administration cleared the routes early in the morning to ensure smooth movement from both the Baltal route in Ganderbal district and the traditional Pahalgam route in Anantnag district.
At the Baltal base camp, light rainfall and cooler temperatures prevailed, but authorities ensured the 14-kilometre route remained open and safe for pilgrims.
Baltal Nodal Officer Rahul Yadav said elaborate arrangements had been made for the smooth conduct of the Yatra.
“The entire district administration has made comprehensive preparations for a smooth Yatra from Baltal. Although there is light drizzle, the route has been kept clear, and we expect around 10,000 pilgrims to undertake the Yatra from Baltal today. Emergency shelters have also been established at various locations to accommodate pilgrims in case of adverse weather,” he said.
Meanwhile, the first batch of pilgrims also departed from the Nunwan-Pahalgam base camp under a multi-layered security cover provided by the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Indian Army.
Pilgrims appreciated the arrangements made by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) and the administration.
A devotee undertaking the pilgrimage for the first time with family said the security personnel and administration had made excellent arrangements for pilgrims.
Another pilgrim travelling via the Baltal route said facilities this year were better than in previous years and appreciated the support extended by local residents, the health department and security forces.
The annual pilgrimage is being conducted under enhanced security with digital surveillance, RFID-based tracking systems and extensive deployment of security personnel to ensure the safety and smooth movement of devotees. The Yatra will conclude on August 28, coinciding with Raksha Bandhan.
