JAMMU: The Department of Ophthalmology at AIIMS Jammu, Vijaypur, observed World Glaucoma Week from March 8 to 14, 2026, conducting screening and awareness activities to highlight the importance of early detection of Glaucoma.
During the week-long programme, patients were screened for glaucoma using advanced diagnostic equipment such as Non-Contact Tonometer, Applanation Tonometer, Automated Perimetry and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). Awareness lectures were also organised in the OPD area for patients and their attendants.
All activities were conducted under the guidance of ED & CEO D. N. Sharma, while logistical support was provided by Dean (Academics) and Medical Superintendent Meeta Gupta.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Sharma said that glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible vision loss and often remains unnoticed until vision is significantly damaged. He emphasised that timely detection and proper management are essential to prevent vision loss.
Additional Professor and Head of the Department of Ophthalmology Bhavani Raina said the department is equipped with advanced technology and expertise to diagnose and manage glaucoma effectively.
The programme was organised with the active involvement of faculty members Nitin Kumar, Nazia Anjum, and Ridham Nanda, along with senior residents Asma Jabeen, Sadaf Chaudhary, and Shefali Verma.
The theme for this year’s Glaucoma Week was “Early Detection is the Key,” highlighting the importance of education and awareness in tackling the disease, often referred to as the silent killer of vision.
