JAMMU: The Department of Surgical Oncology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences Jammu has successfully performed a highly complex surgery on a patient suffering from a large left adrenal tumor, marking a significant milestone in the institute’s journey toward advanced cancer care.
The patient, who was initially diagnosed outside the institute with non-specific complaints and imaging suggestive of a left adrenal tumor, visited several healthcare centres before finally reaching AIIMS Jammu. At the institute, comprehensive investigations including advanced imaging and biochemical tests confirmed the presence of a functional adrenal tumor, which can cause severe intraoperative complications such as sudden spikes in blood pressure. A multidisciplinary tumor board meeting was convened to formulate a detailed treatment strategy.
Recognizing the complexity of the case, the Department of Endocrinology, under the guidance of Juhi Jamwal, Assistant Professor, initiated pre-operative optimization with alpha and beta blockade therapy to stabilize the patient’s pulse and blood pressure before surgery.
The patient was also suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). With the expertise of Ganesh Kumar, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pulmonary Medicine, the respiratory condition was carefully managed to ensure safe anaesthesia and surgical outcomes.
In a rare and highly specialized intervention at AIIMS Jammu, Shariq, Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiodiagnosis (Interventional Radiology), performed pre-operative trans-arterial tumor embolization to block the blood supply to the adrenal tumor. This critical step significantly reduced the risk of bleeding and other intraoperative complications.
Following embolization, the patient underwent left adrenalectomy with splenectomy, performed by the Surgical Oncology team led by Paras Khanna, Assistant Professor, Surgical Oncology. The procedure was carried out with the support of the anaesthesia team comprising Shruti Sharma, Additional Professor, Slomi Gupta, Assistant Professor, and Sandeepika Dogra, Assistant Professor, Department of Anaesthesiology.
The ICU nursing staff and ward teams also played a crucial role by providing continuous monitoring and post-operative care, ensuring the patient’s steady recovery. After a week of observation, the patient has been declared clinically stable and is being discharged.
