RANCHI: Gurindervir Singh became the first Indian man to clock under 10.10 seconds in the men’s 100 metres, storming to victory at the Federation Cup in Ranchi with a sensational national record timing of 10.09 seconds.
The 24-year-old sprinter shaved 0.06 seconds off the previous national record, which had been set just a day earlier by Animesh Kujur during the semifinals with a timing of 10.15 seconds.
Ironically, Gurindervir Singh himself had briefly held the national record after clocking 10.17 seconds in the semifinals before Animesh Kujur surpassed it minutes later.
However, Gurindervir reclaimed the record in emphatic fashion during the final, becoming the first Indian athlete to breach the 10.10-second barrier in the men’s 100m event.
Both Gurindervir Singh and Animesh Kujur also secured qualification for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where they will represent India in the men’s 100m competition.
In another historic achievement for Indian athletics, Vishal Thennarasu Kayalvizhi became the first Indian man to break the 45-second barrier in the 400m event.
Vishal Thennarasu Kayalvizhi clinched victory in the Federation Cup men’s 400m race with a national record timing of 44.98 seconds.
The landmark performance came shortly after Gurindervir Singh’s record-breaking run, making it a memorable day for Indian sprinting at the Federation Cup in Ranchi.
Earlier during the semifinals of the National Senior Athletics Federation Competition 2026, Gurindervir Singh had broken the previous national record of 10.18 seconds with a timing of 10.17 seconds before Animesh Kujur improved it further to 10.15 seconds in the following heat.
