JAMMU: The Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery at AIIMS Jammu has successfully performed advanced reconstructive surgery on a four-year-old child suffering from severe post-burn hand contracture deformity and fused fingers, offering new hope in the treatment of complex hand injuries and deformities.
According to a press release, the department continues to provide advanced reconstructive and hand surgery services to patients from Jammu and Kashmir as well as neighbouring states including Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
The department routinely manages complex hand injuries, tendon repairs, congenital hand deformities, post-burn contractures, microsurgical procedures, flap reconstructions, artificial skin substitute applications and skin grafting surgeries with multidisciplinary support from Orthopaedics and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR).
Dr Rahul Gorka, Assistant Professor and Officiating Head, Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery, said several referred and difficult cases, including paediatric hand trauma and deformity patients, are now being successfully treated at AIIMS Jammu using advanced reconstructive techniques, microsurgical precision, staged rehabilitation and detailed surgical planning.
He said many patients had long-standing deformities, delayed presentation or had previously been considered difficult for surgical correction elsewhere.
In one recent case, a four-year-old child was brought to AIIMS Jammu with severe post-burn hand contracture deformity that caused fusion of the thumb and fingers following childhood burn injuries.
After detailed evaluation and planning, doctors performed successful reconstructive surgery involving contracture release, separation of fused digits, local flap coverage, multiple Z-plasties and full-thickness skin grafting under a single surgical plan aimed at restoring hand function and mobility.
Doctors said the child has shown significant functional improvement and recovery following surgery and rehabilitation.
