LEH: Lieutenant Governor Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena inaugurated five new districts—Changthang, Nubra, Zanskar, Sham, and Drass—just days after approving the notification for their creation, marking a major step towards decentralised governance in the Union Territory.
Vinai Kumar Saxena congratulated the people of Ladakh and said the move fulfils a long-pending demand of local representatives while aligning with the vision of Governance at Doorsteps of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He described the initiative as a new beginning aimed at bringing administration closer to remote communities.
Highlighting the region’s challenging terrain, Vinai Kumar Saxena said residents often travel long distances to access basic services, and the creation of new districts will improve accessibility, ensure faster service delivery, and enhance administrative outreach.
He directed newly appointed Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police to adopt a people-centric approach, conduct regular village visits, organise outreach programmes, and ensure prompt grievance redressal while maintaining law and order.
Vinai Kumar Saxena also stressed the need to address key issues such as water scarcity by improving utilisation and storage of glacial meltwater to support agriculture and livelihoods.
He expressed confidence that the new districts will accelerate development, strengthen governance, and meet the aspirations of people across Ladakh.
