JAMMU: Seasoned endurance athletes Aman Gupta and Sawan Nagpal, both accomplished Ironman finishers, successfully completed the prestigious Tata Mumbai Ultra held in Lonavala. Competing in the grueling 50-km category, the duo clocked sub-5-hour finishes, securing spots among the top 70 runners out of nearly 1,800 participants.
Preparation and Purpose
Their journey toward the ultra-marathon began in September 2025, with a structured and intensive training regimen focused on building stamina, strength, and long-distance endurance. The Tata Mumbai Ultra served as a key milestone in their endurance calendar, reflecting months of disciplined preparation and mental conditioning.
The Race Experience
Renowned for its challenging terrain, the race winds through the undulating slopes of the Sahyadri mountain range, testing runners with continuous ascents and descents. With a refreshing February morning start, participants were treated to scenic views along the route, including:
- Bhushi Dam
- INS Shivaji
- Lion’s Point
- Shivling Point
- Monkey Point
- Peth Shahapur Fort
- Morgiri Fort
The course also passes through the Tata Mumbai Ultra (TUM) base area, located at an elevation of approximately 800 metres above sea level, adding an additional altitude challenge to the already demanding route.
Legacy and Significance
The Tata Mumbai Ultra is deeply rooted in the historic legacy of the Tata Group in Lonavala. More than 150 years ago, Jamsetji Tata established India’s first hydroelectric power project in these hills to supply clean energy to Mumbai. The ultra-marathon today stands as a tribute to endurance, innovation, and resilience—values closely aligned with that legacy.
Athlete Reflections
Reflecting on their achievement, Aman Gupta and Sawan Nagpal expressed pride in completing one of India’s toughest ultra-marathons. They highlighted the importance of discipline, teamwork, and mental strength in conquering such demanding terrain. Their strong finish at the Tata Mumbai Ultra marks yet another milestone in their ongoing journey as endurance athletes.
