JAMMU: In a decisive move to safeguard public health and strengthen urban sanitation, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) on Monday carried out a large-scale demolition drive against unhygienic slum structures at multiple locations across Jammu city.
The drive was conducted on the directions of JMC Commissioner Dr Devansh Yadav and was led by Deputy Commissioner (North) JMC Sanjay Badyal, along with the JMC Enforcement Team.
During the operation, slum settlements lacking basic sanitation facilities were identified and removed from areas near Jaggi Darbar, Paloura, near Janipur Police Station, Lower Roopnagar and Subhash Nagar. Officials said these settlements posed a serious threat to public health, environmental hygiene and overall sanitation in the city.
Nearly 100 unhygienic and unauthorized structures were demolished during the drive. Authorities noted that such constructions violate municipal norms and hinder the city’s efforts to maintain cleanliness, particularly under the Open Defecation Free (ODF) framework.
The Jammu Municipal Corporation stated that similar enforcement and demolition drives will be carried out in other parts of the city in the coming days to prevent the spread of unhygienic settlements and ensure strict compliance with sanitation regulations.
Reaffirming its commitment to building a clean, healthy and ODF-compliant Jammu, the JMC appealed to the public to cooperate with civic authorities and adhere to sanitation norms in the larger interest of the city’s well-being.
