JAMMU: AIIMS Jammu organised a comprehensive CME-cum-Simulation Workshop on Obstetric Anaesthesia themed “Preventing the Preventable,” bringing together leading experts, postgraduate trainees, residents, and over 70 delegates from medical institutions across J&K.
The workshop, conducted by the Department of Anaesthesiology, aimed to enhance maternal safety, strengthen obstetric anaesthesia practices, and promote simulation-based clinical preparedness.
The scientific sessions featured distinguished national faculty including Prof. Kajal Jain, Prof. Anju Grewal, and Dr. Soumya Sarkar from PGIMER Chandigarh and AIIMS Bathinda, who delivered sessions on labour analgesia, high-risk obstetric assessment, neonatal resuscitation environments, and structured perioperative care.
Additional expert insights came from Dr. Manokanth Madapu (Fernandez Hospitals, Hyderabad) renowned for specialised obstetric anaesthesia frameworks; Dr. Meeta Gupta (AIIMS Jammu) who addressed intrapartum anaesthesia in resource-variable settings; and Dr. Renu Wakhloo (GMC Jammu) who discussed regional maternal risk realities and emergency system needs.
Delegates from GMC Jammu, GMC Kathua, GMC Rajouri, GMC Udhampur, ASCOMS, SMVDU College of Nursing, and other institutions contributed to an interdisciplinary knowledge exchange. The diverse representation enabled participants to align simulation learnings with real-world obstetric challenges in varied healthcare settings.
The workshop combined evidence-based academic sessions with high-fidelity simulation modules, enabling participants to practice management of obstetric emergencies such as postpartum haemorrhage, airway complications, anaesthetic adversities, and coordinated multidisciplinary responses. The hands-on modules emphasised critical skill areas including team communication, early clinical recognition, escalation pathways, and rapid response strategies—key determinants of maternal outcome improvement globally.
Prof. (Dr.) Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director & CEO, AIIMS Jammu, inaugurated the programme and highlighted the workshop theme as an important step towards safe motherhood and reduction of preventable maternal mortality. He appreciated the practical structure of the sessions focusing on labour analgesia, obstetric haemorrhage, emergency management, and the value of simulation-based skill enhancement. He encouraged active participation and interdisciplinary collaboration, noting that every insight gained translates into improved maternal care.
