RAJOURI: Deputy Commissioner Rajouri Abhishek Sharma today chaired a meeting of the District Steering Committee to discuss & review the implementation plan for the National Mission for Green India (GIM).
The meeting discussed the Annual Plans of Operations for 2026-27 and 2027-28, besides reviewing the Five-Year Perspective Plan for 2026-27 to 2030-31.
At the outset, the concerned officer briefed the committee about the objectives of the mission, including increasing forest and tree cover, improving forest quality, ecosystem restoration and enhancement of ecosystem services. He also presented details regarding the area to be treated, proposed plantation and restoration activities, support components and financial requirements.
During the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner stressed upon giving greater thrust to plantation drives in schools, forest and community plantation drives and wider public participation under the Green India Mission. He called for exploring the plantation of suitable species such as Amla, Jamun and other locally appropriate fruit-bearing/native plants, wherever feasible, to promote ecological as well as community benefits.
The DC directed the Forest and concerned departments to identify suitable sites scientifically, ensure availability of quality planting material and undertake plantation activities in a planned and coordinated manner. He emphasized effective convergence with MGNREGA and other line departments, active involvement of Joint Forest Management Committees and timely completion of advance works before the plantation season.
He further called for a robust monitoring mechanism to ensure proper survival and maintenance of plantations and directed all concerned departments to work in close coordination for achieving the objectives of the Green India Mission.
