SRINAGAR: Night temperatures across Kashmir rose marginally, with Srinagar recording a minimum of 2.6 degrees Celsius—around three degrees above the seasonal average—officials said on Monday.
Meteorological officials noted that minimum temperatures in the summer capital have been witnessing a gradual rise since the conclusion of Chillai Kalan, the 40-day harshest winter period in the Valley.
The ski resort of Gulmarg in Baramulla district remained the coldest place in Jammu and Kashmir, registering a low of minus 8 degrees Celsius. Pahalgam, a prominent tourist destination in south Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 5.5 degrees Celsius.
Elsewhere, Qazigund recorded a minimum of 0.7 degrees Celsius, Kokernag minus 0.6 degrees Celsius, while Kupwara settled at minus 1.3 degrees Celsius.
Following the end of Chillai Kalan, the 20-day Chillai Khurd (small cold) began on Saturday. This phase will be followed by Chillai Bachha (baby cold), a 10-day period marking the gradual end of winter’s grip on the region.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has forecast light rain, with snowfall in higher reaches, on Monday and Tuesday.
