JAMMU: The Environment Unit of MIER College of Education (Autonomous) organized a symposium to mark World Ozone Day 2025, themed “Scientific Discoveries and Global Actions for Ozone Layer Protection.”
The event was held in collaboration with the Department of Ecology, Environment, and Remote Sensing, Government of J&K, with the aim of sensitizing students and faculty about the ozone layer’s critical role in sustaining life and the urgent need for its conservation.
The programme began with a welcome address by Dr. Monika Bajaj, Head, School of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSSH).
The Chief Guest, Dr. Rajan Singh, SFSESC/Coordinator, EIACP, Department of Ecology, Environment, and Remote Sensing, J&K, delivered the keynote lecture. He highlighted key scientific discoveries on the ozone layer, outlined global actions and policies to curb ozone-depleting substances, and emphasized the collective responsibility to protect this vital shield of the Earth.
Student Participation & Presentations
The symposium provided a platform for students to share ideas, perspectives, and strategies for ozone conservation. A total of 15 students presented their well-researched viewpoints before a distinguished panel of judges comprising:
- Anil Sharma (Range Officer, EIACP)
- Dr. Kirti Joshi (Program Officer, EIACP)
- Prof. Nishta Rana (Head, School of Education, MIER College)
After evaluation, the winners were declared as follows:
- First Position: Aditi Mahajan (B.A. Hons. Psychology, Semester VII)
- Second Position: Unmesh Kant Singh (B.A. Hons. Political Science, Semester V)
- Third Position: Ananya (B.A. Hons. Psychology, Semester VII)
The results were announced by Dr. Bharti Tandon, Deputy Head, SoE.
Honours & Acknowledgements
As a token of appreciation, Prof. Adit Gupta, Principal & Director, and Mrs. Rupa Gupta, Joint Director, MIER College, presented mementos to the Chief Guest and jury members.
The event proceedings were skillfully conducted by Ishika Bali (B.Ed. Semester II), ensuring a smooth flow of activities. The symposium concluded with the distribution of refreshments to participants and attendees.
In his concluding remarks, Prof. Adit Gupta congratulated the winners, appreciated the enthusiastic participation of students, and lauded the efforts of the Environment Unit for successfully organizing the event. He emphasized that World Ozone Day serves as a vital reminder of humanity’s shared responsibility to safeguard the ozone layer for future generations.
The programme was organized under the overall guidance of Suman Gupta (Assistant Professor & Incharge, Environment Unit) and Jasleen Kour (Assistant Professor & Member, Environment Unit, MIER College).
