NEW DELHI: The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, today called on Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, in New Delhi and discussed several critical infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening connectivity and promoting sustainable development across the Union Territory.
The Lt. Governor conveyed deep appreciation for the Ministry’s continued support in transforming Ladakh’s transportation landscape, particularly through landmark projects such as the Zojila Tunnel, which has significantly enhanced year-round connectivity and public confidence in the region.
Focus on All-Weather Connectivity
During the meeting, the Lt. Governor sought the Union Minister’s intervention for the early approval and execution of the Key-La Tunnel Project, noting its strategic importance for ensuring all-weather mobility in eastern Ladakh. He further proposed that the Key-La Tunnel and two key bypass routes —
- Phey–Ranbirpura (31.9 km) and
- Rinchen Chowk–Saboo Village Junction (17.6 km)
— be handed over to NHIDCL, citing the corporation’s expertise in executing high-altitude projects efficiently.
Bridge & Road Proposals Under CRIF
Kavinder Gupta also urged the Ministry to approve the supplementary proposal under CRIF 2024–25, with special emphasis on the construction of a 7×80-metre double-lane bridge over River Shyok (Diskit–Burma) under the Setu Bandhan Scheme. He requested inclusion of additional road and bridge proposals in the upcoming CRIF 2025–26 to further enhance regional mobility and economic integration.
Panikhar–Pahalgam Road Project Highlighted
The Lt. Governor stressed the importance of the Panikhar–Pahalgam Road Project, describing it as both a strategic alternate route between Ladakh and Kashmir and a major boost for tourism and livelihoods. The 106-km stretch, including a proposed 3-km tunnel at Bobang Gali Pass, would provide an all-weather link vital for civilian movement and defense requirements.
Centre Assures Full Support
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari assured full cooperation and reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to accelerating infrastructure development in Ladakh, given its strategic significance and socio-economic potential.
