MUMBAI: Jio Platforms Limited (JPL), the technology arm of Reliance Industries Limited, has entered the global top 20 in the latest Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) rankings released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), marking one of the most significant rises by an Indian technology company on the global innovation stage.
According to the WIPO report based on published Patent Cooperation Treaty data for 2025, Jio Platforms climbed 320 positions to secure the 20th rank globally, making it one of the fastest-rising innovators in the world.
The achievement places Jio Platforms among an elite group of global technology leaders, including Huawei, Samsung, Qualcomm, LG, Panasonic, Nokia, Google, Apple and Microsoft.
Jio’s patent portfolio is concentrated on next-generation digital technologies, including 5G, 5G Advanced, 6G, artificial intelligence, AI-native networks, cloud-native platforms, intelligent automation, radio access technologies, core network software, edge intelligence, fixed wireless access, network slicing and digital services infrastructure.
Commenting on the achievement, Akash M. Ambani, Managing Director of Jio Platforms Limited, said the milestone reflected the company’s transformation into a deep-tech enterprise.
“The rise of Jio Platforms to the global top 20 in the WIPO PCT rankings reflects our years of efforts towards transforming into a deep-tech company. It demonstrates the velocity of innovation at Jio across multiple advanced technologies, which will continue to grow in coming years. I would like to dedicate this achievement to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat, which envisages India to become a creator, owner and exporter of technology to the world. We are proud to contribute to India’s journey towards becoming a global deep-tech powerhouse,” Akash M. Ambani said.
The achievement is particularly notable because it comes during a year when global Patent Cooperation Treaty filings increased by less than one per cent worldwide, highlighting the scale of Jio’s growth in research and innovation.
Industry observers view the WIPO ranking as a significant international recognition of Jio Platforms’ research and development capabilities and the depth of its intellectual property portfolio, firmly positioning India-origin innovation within the global technology creation ecosystem.
According to Jio Platforms, the company had filed a cumulative 6,817 patents as of March 31, 2026. Of these, 2,393 patents were filed in India, while 4,424 patents were filed across international jurisdictions.
The company reported that 1,009 patents have been granted globally, including 538 patents in India and 471 patents in international markets.
Jio Platforms said its innovation strategy is focused on technologies and platforms developed and commercialised at scale, while simultaneously investing in emerging technologies expected to shape the future of digital infrastructure.
Among the key areas under development are 5G and 6G radio technologies, 5G and 6G core networks, satellite communications and Agentic Artificial Intelligence through JioBrain, which the company considers central to its future growth strategy.
The company said these investments provide its intellectual property portfolio with a long-term growth trajectory linked directly to future commercial deployment and technological leadership.
Jio Platforms’ rise in the WIPO rankings is being viewed as a reflection of a broader transformation within India’s technology ecosystem, signalling a shift from large-scale technology adoption and deployment towards original technology creation, innovation and global intellectual property leadership.
