JAMMU: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday visited the flood-hit areas of Jammu, officials said. He will also visit Manguchak, the worst-hit village of the district. JAMMU:  The Vaishno Devi Yatra remained suspended for the 7th consecutive day on Monday owing to inclement weather and safety concerns along the track. The base camp at Katra wore a deserted look with only a few pilgrims waiting for the restoration of the pilgrimage. A slight improvement in the weather was witnessed this morning, raising hopes for an early resumption of the Yatra. Authorities, however, said that the situation is being closely monitored and movement will be allowed only after clearance from the concerned agencies.

JAMMU: The Indian Army troops on Monday scuttled an infiltration bid by terrorists along the Line of Control (LoC) in Mendhar Sector of Poonch district, officials said. Troops guarding the border noticed a group of terrorists trying to sneak into the country from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, they said. The movement was noticed near Dabbi village of Balakote area in the early hours of the day. Heavy gunfire was exchanged between the two sides. There was no immediate report of any casualty on either side. The whole area has been cordoned off, and a massive search operation is underway, officials said.

At least 250 people have been killed and 400 others injured after a 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan, local officials have said. The earthquake struck the country’s rugged northeastern province of Kunar near the Pakistan border at 11.47pm local time (8.17pm UK time) on Sunday, the German Research Centre for Geosciences said. Rescuers are working in several districts of the mountainous province where the quake hit. Hundreds of injured people have been taken to hospital, a local official said, with figures likely to rise. JAMMU: Two people were arrested for their alleged involvement in an act of sacrilege in Kuniyan area of Poonch district, police said on Monday. Police also seized a vehicle used to commit the act, a police spokesperson said. The two were booked under section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with the offense of deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings.

JAMMU: Traffic was partially restored on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway on Monday, providing relief to hundreds of commuters stranded on the arterial road over the past six days. JAMMU: A powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.0 on the Richter scale struck southeastern Afghanistan on Monday. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the quake occurred at 00:47:41 IST, with its epicentre located at latitude 34.50N and longitude 70.81E, at a depth of 160 km. Naqibullah Rahimi, spokesperson for the Nangarhar Public Health Department, told Reuters that at least nine people were killed and 15 others injured. The quake was felt across Pakistan and northern India — including Delhi-NCR — where residents reported strong tremors. Buildings shook, prompting people to rush outside.
