JAMMU: In a significant boost to tertiary urological care in the region, the Department of Urology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jammu has successfully commenced advanced endourological services, including Transurethral Resection of Prostate (TURP) and Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumour (TURBT).
The services have been introduced under the visionary leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director & CEO, AIIMS Jammu, with the aim of providing state-of-the-art, minimally invasive urological care to patients in Jammu and adjoining regions, thereby reducing the need for referrals to distant tertiary centres.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. (Dr.) Shakti Kumar Gupta said, “The introduction of advanced endourological procedures such as TURP and TURBT at AIIMS Jammu marks an important milestone in strengthening superspecialty healthcare services. Our goal is to ensure that patients receive high-quality, modern, and evidence-based medical care closer to home.”
The procedures were successfully performed by Dr. Yaser Rahman, Assistant Professor, Department of Urology, assisted by Dr. Mohammad Yaseen, Senior Resident. The surgeries were carried out with dedicated anaesthesia support led by Dr. Sunaina Gupta, along with Dr. Shruti Sharma and Dr. Sandeepika Dogra, ensuring optimal perioperative care and patient safety. The surgical team was further supported by skilled Operation Theatre technicians Ms. Disha Daksh and Mr. Mohit, whose technical expertise ensured the smooth conduct of the procedures.
TURP is considered the gold-standard minimally invasive procedure for managing urinary obstruction caused by benign prostatic enlargement, a common condition among elderly men. TURBT serves as a critical diagnostic and therapeutic procedure for bladder tumours, allowing accurate diagnosis, staging, and timely intervention.
Both procedures are endoscopic and incision-free, offering advantages such as shorter hospital stays, reduced postoperative discomfort, faster recovery, and early return to normal activities, significantly improving patient outcomes and quality of life.
Highlighting the clinical importance of these services, Dr. Yaser Rahman stated that the availability of TURP and TURBT at AIIMS Jammu will enable timely, minimally invasive management of common urological conditions, reducing hospital stay and enhancing recovery and outcomes.
The launch of these advanced endourological services reaffirms AIIMS Jammu’s commitment to comprehensive, patient-centric healthcare using modern surgical techniques. With this development, patients suffering from prostate-related urinary obstruction and bladder tumours can now access advanced urological care closer to home.
