JAMMU Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday asserted that the government will take firm action against encroachment on government land, beginning with influential violators before proceeding against the poor.
Replying to the discussion on Demands for Grants in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, the Chief Minister said there was broad consensus across party lines on the need to remove encroachments. However, he stressed that the process must be fair, transparent and guided by proper administrative advice.
Referring to concerns raised by BJP MLA Sham Lal Sharma that bulldozers are often used against the poor while influential individuals escape action, Abdullah said the point was valid and reflected a long-standing practice that needs correction.
“When we initiate action, we must first proceed against big land sharks and powerful land grabbers who often shield themselves by aligning with political parties or leaders,” he said.
The Chief Minister assured the House that the government would prioritise action against such influential encroachers. Only thereafter, and if required, would action extend to others, ensuring that the process remains equitable and just.
Members cutting across party lines had earlier voiced concerns over selective enforcement and urged the government to begin anti-encroachment drives against powerful individuals before targeting economically weaker sections.
