JAMMU: In a major initiative to plug gaps in tenant reporting and enhance internal security, the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday launched an online tenant verification portal titled ‘Kirayedar’. The portal has been developed to simplify compliance and streamline the process of tenant verification, officials said.
The portal was launched for the general public by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu, Joginder Singh, who expressed hope that the initiative would lead to a significant increase in tenant reporting and verification across the district.
Speaking on the occasion, SSP Joginder Singh said that Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed incidents of anti-social and anti-national activities in the past, making internal security a top priority for the police. “Ensuring internal security and providing a safe and secure environment for citizens is the prime responsibility of the police so that peace and prosperity may flourish in every nook and corner of the Union Territory,” he said.
The SSP noted that Jammu, being the winter capital, witnesses a continuous influx of people from different regions of the UT, particularly during the winter months. Many of these people reside in rented accommodations. Additionally, several large infrastructure projects underway in and around Jammu have led to an increased presence of labourers, contractors and technical staff living in rented premises.
He cautioned that such a large influx could be exploited by anti-national elements by taking rented accommodations under false identities. While tenant reporting and verification have been made mandatory, with the Deputy Commissioner issuing formal orders in this regard, compliance has remained a challenge.
“It has been observed that many landlords are elderly, out of station, or unable to visit police stations due to busy schedules or job constraints. In many cases, people are also reluctant to visit police stations. These factors were hampering tenant reporting and subsequent verification,” the SSP said. He added that in response, police had registered 12 FIRs against defaulting landlords and conducted over 10,000 tenant verifications.
To address these challenges, SSP Joginder Singh said Jammu Police adopted a proactive approach by developing the ‘Kirayedar’ online portal. He informed that the portal was developed through the collaborative efforts of three students from IIT Jammu and one local youth from Kathua, under the guidance of the SDPO City West Jammu.
Describing the portal as user-friendly and accessible anytime from anywhere, the SSP said it would serve as an effective communication bridge between landlords and the police, ultimately benefiting public safety and strengthening the security framework in Jammu.
