GOA: The International Film Festival of India (IFFI) witnessed an evening of moving cinema and inspiring storytelling as acclaimed actor-filmmaker Anupam Kher showcased his latest directorial venture, Tanvi the Great.
The film follows the extraordinary journey of a young girl on the autism spectrum who dreams of joining the Indian Army like her father. Misunderstood by society yet unwavering in her spirit, Tanvi proves that true heroism is rooted not in ability, but in heart.
Accompanied by actress Shubhangi Dutt, Anupam Kher addressed the media following the festival screening, which received an exceptionally warm and enthusiastic response from audiences and delegates.
Kher spoke emotionally about the personal relevance of the film, sharing that its narrative draws inspiration from moments within his own life and family. Reflecting on the film’s theme, he said that society often treats the opposite of “normal” as “abnormal,” but it should instead be celebrated as “extraordinary.” He emphasized that he continues to be drawn toward stories rooted in resilience, empathy, and transformation — films that “touch the core of human emotions and inspire individuals to bring positive and meaningful changes in their lives.”
One of the highlights of the interaction was the presence of debutant Shubhangi Dutt, who plays the title character. Speaking about her first cinematic experience, she expressed deep admiration for Kher’s disciplined and insightful approach to directing. While she described him as a “strict teacher,” she credited his mentorship for helping her discover her potential as a performer. Looking ahead, Shubhangi expressed her desire to take on diverse and challenging roles that contribute to meaningful cinema.
With its uplifting message, rooted characters, and emotionally resonant storytelling, Tanvi the Great continues to earn acclaim from critics and audiences alike. Its reception at IFFI stands as an important milestone in the film’s journey — highlighting its universal appeal across generations and cultures.
