SRINAGAR: A brief exchange took place in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Wednesday after Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather disallowed NC MLA Mubarak Gul from speaking in Kashmiri during the Zero Hour session, citing the absence of a translator in the House.
Mubarak Gul had begun his address in Kashmiri while recalling conversations with local youth who raised concerns over encroachment and illegal constructions around water bodies. However, the Speaker intervened, stating that the remarks would not be recorded.
“Why are you speaking in Kashmiri language without permission? There is no translator available in the House, so the speech is not going on the record,” the Speaker told the MLA.
Following the objection, Mubarak Gul switched to Urdu and continued his statement, expressing concern that regional languages such as Kashmiri and Dogri were being neglected in the education system, despite official claims of promoting them.
“As per the latest report, it has been found that Kashmiri, Dogri and other regional languages are not being taught in schools. The government should look into the matter,” he said.
