JAMMU: Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), Dr. Devansh Yadav, today visited Gorkha Nagar to assess the situation following the recent heavy rains and floods that caused extensive damage in the area.
During the visit, Dr. Yadav inspected the Gorkha Nagar Cremation Ground, which is widely used by residents of Gorkha Nagar, Bahu Fort, and adjoining localities for performing last rites. The recent floods in River Tawi led to a sharp rise in water levels, resulting in significant damage to the cremation ground infrastructure. Boundary walls and pathways were affected, and a large amount of silt, debris, and garbage had accumulated in and around the premises, making it difficult for residents to access the site.
Immediately after the floods, the Jammu Municipal Corporation launched emergency clearance operations. JCB machines were deployed to remove debris and restore approach roads to the cremation ground. The Commissioner directed officials to expedite repair and restoration work and ensure the site’s rehabilitation in a time-bound manner.
“The recent floods caused severe damage across Jammu city, and the Gorkha Nagar cremation ground was among the affected locations,” said Dr. Yadav. “JMC promptly initiated clearance and restoration activities to provide relief to the residents. A detailed proposal has already been submitted to the government for the release of funds for comprehensive flood restoration work. Meanwhile, temporary repairs at the cremation ground have already begun to meet immediate public needs.”
The Commissioner further informed that JMC will undertake the construction of raised platforms and installation of tin sheds at the cremation ground to facilitate cremation rituals in all weather conditions. He emphasized that cremation grounds hold deep emotional significance for communities, and the Corporation is committed to maintaining them with dignity and respect.
Dr. Yadav also directed officials to prepare a detailed damage assessment report to plan for long-term restoration once financial assistance is received. He reiterated JMC’s commitment to ensuring cleanliness, sanitation, and basic amenities at all public facilities, including cremation grounds, graveyards, and community infrastructure.
Local residents and representatives expressed gratitude to the Commissioner for his prompt action and personal visit, appreciating JMC’s efforts in ensuring early restoration of the cremation ground — a site of deep emotional and cultural importance.
Among others, Joint Commissioner (Works) Firdous Ahmed Qazi, Health Officer Dr. Vinod Sharma, and Executive Engineer Bashir Ahmed Kichloo accompanied the Commissioner during the visit.
