1. 43 years & 322 days – MS Dhoni (CSK) vs GT at Ahmedabad, 2025
Legendary Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni takes the top spot, having led CSK at the age of 43 years and 322 days against Gujarat Titans (GT) in 2025. Dhoni filled in for Ruturaj Gaikwad midway through the season, who was ruled out of the tournament due to an elbow injury. He continues to be the joint-most successful captain in IPL history, having led CSK to five titles.
2. 41 years & 249 days – Shane Warne (RR) vs MI at Mumbai (WS), 2011
Legendary Australia wrist-spinner Shane Warne takes the second spot, having last captained Rajasthan Royals (RR) in 2011 at the age of 41 years and 249 days. Warne is counted amongst the greatest captains in the tournament’s history, having guided an underdog RR to IPL triumph in the maiden season. Warne dismissed many batters during his career who had also won the IPL Orange Cap, scalping 57 wickets from 54 innings.
3. 41 years & 185 days – Adam Gilchrist (PBKS) vs MI at Dharamsala, 2013
The legendary wicketkeeper-batter is ranked third, having captained Punjab Kings against Mumbai Indians in 2013 at the age of 41 years and 185 days. Gilchrist brought his ruthless strokeplay from international cricket into the IPL, playing several belligerent innings for his teams. He scored 2069 runs from 80 innings with two hundreds and 11 fifties and even guided Deccan Chargers to their maiden IPL triumph in 2009.
