SRINAGAR: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Monday said the government should not take any coercive or irreversible action regarding the attached properties of the banned outfit Jamaat-e-Islami in Jammu and Kashmir.
“Since the Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) leadership has publicly stated that it will abide by the decision of the judiciary and challenge the ban through due process of law, the government is equally bound to act in accordance with the law and due process.
“It must ensure that no coercive or irreversible action is taken in respect of the attached properties while the matter remains sub judice,” Mehbooba said in a post on X.
The former chief minister’s remarks come against the backdrop of recent attachment of JeI properties in Sopore area of Baramulla district.
On Thursday, police attached two buildings, six shops and two ‘kanals’ (one kanal = 505.857 sq metre) of land in Sopore, after completing the necessary legal procedures under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
“The rule of law requires equal treatment, procedural fairness, and respect for judicial authority. It cannot be applied selectively or at the discretion of those in power,” the PDP president added.
