SRINAGAR: Senior IPS officer M K Sinha on Friday assumed charge as the new Additional Director General of Police (ADG), Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Jammu and Kashmir, succeeding Nitish Kumar, who has been transferred and posted as ADG Armed Police J&K.
Soon after taking over, Sinha held a meeting with senior officers at CID Headquarters and reviewed the overall functioning of the department, including its intelligence-related responsibilities.
Officials said he was briefed about the functioning of various wings of the CID as well as ongoing assignments and operational priorities.
Sinha, a 1996-batch IPS officer of the AGMUT cadre, was serving as ADG Headquarters at Police Headquarters, J&K, before his latest posting.
He had been holding the ADG Headquarters assignment since May 2021 and was also given additional charge of the Security Service Group (SSG), J&K, in June 2023.
His appointment as ADG CID is part of a major reshuffle in the Jammu and Kashmir Police administration ordered by the Home Department on August 27, involving 14 senior IPS and Jammu and Kashmir Police Service officers.
As part of the reshuffle, Nitish Kumar, a 1999-batch IPS officer, was transferred from the post of ADG CID and Director, State Investigation Agency (SIA), and posted as ADG Armed Police J&K.
Sinha brings extensive experience in policing, intelligence, investigation and administration and has served in several key field and headquarters assignments during his career in Jammu and Kashmir.
His earlier postings include SDPO Samba, SSP Border Jammu, officiating SSP Jammu, SSP Rajouri, SSP Vigilance Jammu, SSP Kathua and AIG Telecom and Information at Police Headquarters.
He later served as DIG Doda-Kishtwar-Ramban Range and DIG Rajouri-Poonch Range.
Sinha was appointed IGP Jammu Zone in December 2018 and subsequently served in other senior assignments. Before his promotion to the rank of ADG, he also served as IGP Crime, J&K.
He has also served on central deputation in the Cabinet Secretariat. The Jammu and Kashmir Government sought his repatriation in late 2018, following which he returned to the Union Territory and was posted as IGP Jammu Zone.
Sinha is a graduate of the National Defence College course and was awarded a gold medal for the best thesis, reflecting his experience in strategic and security-related matters.
He was empanelled in 2024 for ADG-level posts at the Centre.
As ADG CID, Sinha will head one of the key components of Jammu and Kashmir’s security architecture, responsible for intelligence gathering, analysis and coordination with other security and law-enforcement agencies.
The CID also plays a significant role in matters concerning internal security, counter-terrorism investigations and assessment of emerging security threats.
