JAMMU: The foundation stone for the renovation and modernisation of the existing Auditorium Hall at Diwan Mandir, Kacchi Chhawani, was laid on Wednesday by Jammu East MLA Yudhvir Sethi in the presence of Jammu Municipal Corporation Commissioner Dr Devansh Yadav.
The project, estimated to cost ₹262.50 lakh, will be fully funded by the Jammu Municipal Corporation through its CAPEX budget.
The initiative is part of JMC’s broader efforts to rejuvenate Jammu’s historic Old City while strengthening public infrastructure and upgrading important community spaces.
Diwan Mandir holds considerable historical, cultural and religious significance for residents of Jammu. Ramlila has been performed at the temple for nearly 150 years, making it an important part of the city’s cultural heritage and a place with deep emotional and religious significance for Old City residents.
Under the project, the existing auditorium will be transformed into a modern and fully equipped community facility.
The proposed works include comprehensive civil renovation, new carpeting, modular seating, complete air-conditioning, CCTV surveillance, a modern fire-fighting system and a state-of-the-art audio system.
Officials said the upgrades would improve the safety, comfort and functionality of the auditorium while preserving its importance as a longstanding community and cultural space.
A large number of residents and prominent members of the community attended the foundation stone-laying ceremony and welcomed the project.
Addressing the gathering, Yudhvir Sethi highlighted the historical and cultural importance of Diwan Mandir and said the modernisation of the auditorium would provide residents with an improved venue for social, cultural and community activities.
He also appreciated the efforts being made to strengthen civic infrastructure and public facilities in Jammu East while complementing the heritage character of the Old City.
Speaking on the occasion, JMC Commissioner Dr Devansh Yadav said the Corporation was undertaking several development initiatives across Jammu city with a focus on improving public infrastructure, upgrading civic amenities and beautifying the Old City.
He said projects being taken up under the CAPEX budget were intended not only to improve facilities for residents but also to preserve and enhance the cultural character and heritage value of Jammu’s historic areas.
