JAMMU: The South Zone Indian Menopause Society Conference (SZIMSCON) was inaugurated in Chennai by Tamil Nadu Health Minister Dr K.G. Arun Raj as the Chief Guest, with Dr Sudhaa Sharma, President of the Indian Menopause Society (IMS), attending as the Guest of Honour.
Addressing the inaugural session, Health and Medical Education Minister Dr K.G. Arun Raj said that following discussions with Dr Sudhaa Sharma, the Tamil Nadu Government would soon introduce a state health scheme dedicated to the welfare of midlife women.
Delivering her presidential address, Dr Sudhaa Sharma, former Professor of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, highlighted the Indian Menopause Society’s initiatives aimed at improving women’s health during midlife. She outlined the society’s ongoing programmes, including urogynecology workshops, the IMS Certified Research Methodology Course, and its outreach campaign to promote awareness of menopausal health in rural India.
In her keynote address, Dr Sharma emphasised the importance of empowering women to prioritise their physical and emotional well-being during menopause.
She urged women to “rediscover and redefine” their priorities during the menopausal transition by adopting healthy lifestyle practices and, where medically indicated, appropriate pharmacotherapy to manage symptoms effectively.
Dr Sharma stressed that with timely awareness, proper medical guidance and lifestyle modifications, women can rejuvenate themselves and lead healthy, active and fulfilling lives during and after menopause.
The conference brought together healthcare professionals, gynaecologists and experts from across the region to discuss the latest developments in menopausal healthcare, women’s wellness and evidence-based treatment strategies.
