JAMMU: Regional Wildlife Warden Jammu Sandeep Kumar on Monday convened a meeting to discuss measures to minimize and restrict the use of single-use plastic and adopt environmentally responsible alternatives for the protection of wildlife, forests, wetlands and natural ecosystems.
The Regional Wildlife Warden emphasized that plastic waste poses a serious threat to wildlife and the environment. Plastic discarded in forests, wetlands, water bodies and protected areas can be ingested by wild animals, cause injuries and mortality, pollute water sources and degrade natural habitats.
He directed Wildlife Wardens to sensitize visitors, tourists, trekkers and local communities to avoid carrying single-use plastic into protected areas and wildlife habitats, carry reusable water bottles and bags and ensure proper collection and disposal of waste.
“Protection of wildlife cannot be achieved without protecting their habitats. Every individual can contribute by reducing plastic use and keeping our natural areas clean and free from plastic waste,” he maintained.
Sandeep Kumar also directed Wildlife Wardens to urge visitors to follow “Leave No Trace” principles while visiting protected areas, wetlands, wildlife habitats and nature trails. Emphasis was laid on promoting responsible tourism, community participation and creating awareness among the younger generation regarding plastic pollution.
The Department reiterated its commitment towards clean, healthy and plastic-free wildlife habitats and encouraged all stakeholders to join hands in safeguarding Jammu’s rich biodiversity for present and future generations.
