NEW DELHI: A record over 7.8 crore income tax returns (ITRs) have been filed for Assessment Year 2026-27 till August 31, the Income Tax Department said on Tuesday.
The figure is higher than last year, when more than 7.3 crore ITRs were filed by September 16, 2025, the extended deadline for non-audit cases for Assessment Year 2025-26.
“A record 7.8 crore+ ITRs have been filed for AY 2026-27 as on August 31, 2026,” the Income Tax Department said in a post on X.
Of the total filings, more than 5.9 crore ITR-1 and ITR-2 returns were submitted by the July 31 due date.
August 31 was the deadline for filing returns for Assessment Year 2026-27 for taxpayers having business or professional income but not liable for audit.
Taxpayers in the non-audit category can file the applicable forms, including ITR-3, ITR-4, ITR-5 or ITR-7, depending on the nature of their income and legal status.
ITR-3 is meant for individuals and Hindu Undivided Families having income from a proprietary business or profession, while ITR-4 is a simplified return form for small and medium taxpayers.
ITR-5 is used by firms, Limited Liability Partnerships and cooperative societies. ITR-6 is filed by companies registered under the Companies Act, while ITR-7 is meant for trusts and charitable institutions.
The latest figures underline the continued rise in tax return filings and digital compliance among taxpayers across the country.
