Bagdogra (West Bengal): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday called upon the armed forces to maintain the highest level of operational readiness, emphasising the need to strengthen domain awareness, cyber resilience and information integrity to effectively counter emerging security threats.
Interacting with Indian Air Force personnel at Air Force Station Bagdogra on November 7, on the eve of Diwali, Singh said the security landscape had become increasingly complex, with modern warfare extending beyond conventional border engagements to include asymmetric warfare, proxy wars, cyberattacks, drone swarms and information operations.
Describing Bagdogra as a strategically important location and a crucial link in India’s security framework, particularly for the northeastern region, he said Air Warriors deployed there serve as a robust shield for the security of the eastern sector.
The Defence Minister also cautioned against attempts by adversaries to exploit vulnerabilities through misleading information on social media, stressing that personnel must remain vigilant against information warfare and efforts to create mistrust among soldiers and local communities.
Highlighting the importance of discipline, courage and professionalism, Singh urged Air Force personnel to strengthen their engagement with the local population and maintain the bond of trust between the armed forces and civilians.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to Aatmanirbhar Bharat, he highlighted the growing contribution of Indian startups and industries in developing drones, anti-drone systems and advanced military equipment. He also stressed the need to make the armed forces increasingly technology-driven to address future security challenges.
Referring to the Cabinet’s approval of the ‘Second Tour of Duty’ for Agniveers, Singh termed the decision a significant Diwali gift. He said Agniveers would get another opportunity to serve the nation, with an opportunity for enrolment as regular soldiers after completing the two-year engagement period, subject to their willingness and fulfilment of selection criteria.
The Defence Minister extended Diwali greetings to Air Warriors and their families, wishing them good health, happiness and prosperity. He also acknowledged the sacrifices made by the families of personnel who remain away from their loved ones while safeguarding the nation.
Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, Air Officer Commanding Air Force Station Bagdogra Air Commodore Manish Sharma and other senior IAF officials were present on the occasion.
