JAMMU: Government Degree College Nagrota, in collaboration with its Nasha Mukht Committee and NSS Unit, organised an awareness lecture on drug abuse under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.
The programme focussed on educating students about the harmful effects of substance abuse, its legal consequences and the importance of adopting healthy and productive lifestyles.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Meena Bharti, Medical Officer, spoke about the medical aspects of drug addiction. She explained how to recognise early signs such as behavioural changes, mood swings and withdrawal from social life and elaborated on the harmful impact of substances like cannabis, opioids, synthetic drugs and inhalants on physical and mental health.
Nisar Ahmed Wani, Sub Inspector Police Station Nagrota, provided a law enforcement perspective, outlining the provisions of the NDPS Act and the penalties for drug possession and trafficking. He urged students to remain aware of the legal implications and to use toll-free helplines to seek help or report drug-related issues.
Highlighting the role of youth in building a drug-free society, M.K. Bhat, Teacher and Coordinator Zone Dansal, encouraged students to actively participate in anti-drug campaigns and work for the betterment of their communities.
Adding another dimension, Shivani Kumari, Teacher GHS Bhatvari, spoke about the importance of good parenting and also cautioned against digital addictions that can affect focus and mental well-being.
Principal Prof. Anjali Mahajan emphasised that education remains the strongest tool to combat drug abuse, urging students to invest their time in skill development and constructive activities. The event witnessed active participation from students, faculty and NSS volunteers, concluding with a pledge to work towards a drug-free India.
Similar events were also held today at GDC Paloura and GDC Kunjwani.
