JAMMU: The Institution of Engineers (India), Jammu Local Centre celebrated World Habitat Day at Channi Himmat, Jammu, with a seminar on the theme “Urban Solutions to Crisis”. The event saw active participation from engineers, professionals, and members of civil society.
The seminar was graced by Dr. Deepak Bansal, Regional Chief, Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited (Jammu) as Chief Guest. Er. Anil Verma, FIE, Chairman, IEI Jammu Local Centre, presided over the function and delivered the Welcome Address.
Er. Verma highlighted the growing urbanization challenge, noting that by 2050, 50% of India’s population and 70% of the world’s population will reside in urban areas. He stressed the responsibility of all stakeholders to ensure cities remain livable. He also emphasized the role of the J&K Real Estate Regulatory Authority in ensuring new colonies are developed with citizens’ and government interests in mind. He raised concerns over the unauthorized dumping of urban waste, advocating for proper landfill sites in Jammu to mitigate urban crises.

Chief Guest Dr. Deepak Bansal delivered a comprehensive presentation, highlighting factors contributing to urban crises, their types in the Indian context, and strategies to address them. He emphasized that urban crisis management requires preparedness, planning, rapid response mechanisms, governance, and stakeholder coordination, rather than temporary solutions. Dr. Bansal also shared examples from Indian and international case studies to demonstrate effective responses to urban crises.
The seminar concluded with Er. Sachin Tickoo, MIE, former Honorary Secretary, conducting the proceedings and delivering the Vote of Thanks, appreciating the active participation of delegates, professionals, and media personnel.
The event underscored the importance of collaborative planning and sustainable urban development to ensure the future livability of cities.
