LEH: The Government of India and the UT Administration remain committed to inclusive development across Ladakh, ensuring that both remote border villages and central towns benefit equally from infrastructure, education, healthcare, and livelihood initiatives.
Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, made these remarks while interacting with a delegation from Nyoma at the LG Secretariat in Leh. He said the administration’s vision is to not only focus on large-scale projects but also strengthen grassroots initiatives that directly improve people’s quality of life.
The Lt Governor highlighted that the decision to create five additional districts, including Changthang, would strengthen governance by bringing administration closer to citizens, while also generating employment opportunities for over 5,000 youth, thereby ensuring their financial stability.
Underscoring Ladakh’s unique tourism potential, Shri Gupta said that the Hanle Dark Sky Reserve in Changthang could become a major attraction for astro-tourism. He proposed training local youth as “Astro-Ambassadors”—equipped with telescopes and scientific guidance—to lead visitors through the pristine night skies, creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for border villages.
During the interaction, Councillor Nyoma Ishey Spalzang, along with Nominated Councillor Ven Konchok Tsephel, requested the early formalisation of new districts, exposure training for pashmina goat herders, and the upgradation of healthcare centres in Changthang.
Separately, social activist Sajjad Kargili met the Lt Governor to raise demands, including the opening of the Drass–Gurez and Panikhar–Pahalgam roads, recruitment of contractual and permanent faculty in the University of Ladakh, promotion of police personnel, and fresh recruitment of Sub-Inspectors in Ladakh Police. A delegation of Electrical Contractors also submitted their demands to the LG.
Concluding the meetings, the Lt Governor reiterated that the UT Administration is committed to addressing the genuine concerns of people and assured that all constructive suggestions would be factored into Ladakh’s overall development roadmap.
