NEW DELHI: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Sunday accused Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of attempting to silence the voice of the nation, describing it as the “biggest crime” and asserting that the INDIA bloc would continue its fight to protect the Constitution and democratic rights.
Addressing a mega rally of the INDIA bloc at Ramlila Maidan, Gandhi said the protest was not associated with any single political party or leader but represented the collective voice of the country.
“This is a united protest. This is India’s protest, India’s voice,” he said, alleging that the Chief Election Commissioner was attempting to suppress the voice and spirit of the nation.
Gandhi maintained that the Opposition’s struggle was not driven by personal animosity towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah or Gyanesh Kumar. Emphasising the values of non-violence and mutual respect, he said the Opposition believed in spreading love rather than hatred.
“The voice of every citizen of India is more important to me, even more important than religion. That is my religion,” he said.
The Congress leader asserted that the Opposition would neither resort to violence nor spread hatred but would continue to resist any attempt to undermine the Constitution.
Invoking the example of ‘Shiv ki Baraat’, Gandhi called for an inclusive India where everyone could participate without discrimination. He also raised concerns over farmers’ livelihoods and employment opportunities for students, arguing that hard work and education should translate into economic security and jobs.
Gandhi further criticised what he described as the concentration of power in the hands of a few people, insisting that the country should not serve the interests of only two or three individuals.
Calling for Gyanesh Kumar’s removal, he described it as the first step towards putting the country back on the right track.
