JAMMU: In a major initiative to preserve and promote Jammu’s linguistic and cultural heritage, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has started installing Dogri-language signboards at prominent intersections, chowks and other important locations across Jammu city.
The initiative has been undertaken under the guidance of JMC Commissioner Dr Devansh Yadav following a request from the Siyana Nagrik Muddad Seva Sanstha, which has also contributed a number of Dogri signboards for installation at suitable locations.
Officials said the move is aimed at giving greater visibility and recognition to Dogri, the mother tongue of the Jammu region and an important marker of its cultural identity.
By incorporating Dogri more prominently into the city’s public spaces, JMC hopes to create greater awareness among residents, particularly the younger generation, about the need to preserve and respect their linguistic heritage.
The Corporation has already taken steps to integrate Dogri into some of its developmental projects. At the Waste to Wonder Park at Bhagwati Nagar, detailed information about monuments and structures displayed at the site has also been provided in Dogri.
Officials said the use of the language at the park and now on signboards across the city reflects an effort to connect urban development with the region’s cultural traditions.
The initiative is expected to strengthen public awareness of Dogra heritage and encourage greater pride among citizens in their language and cultural roots.
Kulbhushan Khajuria, Joint Commissioner (Revenue & Enforcement), JMC, who also serves as Additional Chief Executive Officer of Jammu Smart City Limited, shared details about the project and its implementation across different parts of the city.
JMC said the initiative forms part of its broader effort to strengthen Jammu’s distinct cultural identity and ensure that Dogri receives greater prominence in everyday public life.
With Dogri gaining a more visible presence on city streets, public spaces and cultural landmarks, the Corporation hopes the initiative will contribute to the preservation and promotion of Jammu’s unique linguistic identity for future generations.
