JAMMU: The investigation into the alleged rape and subsequent death of a 15-year-old girl in Kishtwar district has been transferred to the Crime Branch, officials said on Saturday.
The minor was allegedly raped by her school teacher over a period of several months. She died on August 20 during a procedure to terminate her pregnancy.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the police has so far arrested six persons in connection with the case, including the teacher accused of rape and a nurse.
The decision to hand over the investigation to the Crime Branch comes amid demands for a prompt, comprehensive and impartial probe into the circumstances leading to the girl’s death and for strict action against those found responsible.
Inspector General of Police, Crime Branch, Sarah Rizvi confirmed that the agency had received communication from Police Headquarters regarding the transfer of the case.
“We are in the process of taking over the case,” she said.
The Crime Branch is expected to examine the evidence collected so far, the role of all accused persons and the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy termination procedure as part of its investigation.
