LEH: Ladakh possesses immense potential to emerge as a premier global film destination, owing to its breathtaking landscapes and unmatched natural beauty that offer filmmakers a perfect canvas for storytelling.
Harnessing this opportunity can significantly boost Ladakh’s tourism sector, attract international attention, and create sustainable economic avenues for the local population.
This was stated by the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, while interacting with members of the Film and Television Federation of Ladakh (FTFL) at the LG Secretariat.
Highlighting the power of cinema in shaping perceptions, the Lt Governor said films not only showcase a region’s culture, traditions, and scenic wonders but also build an emotional connection with global audiences.
This, he noted, directly translates into increased tourist arrivals, job opportunities, and economic growth. Film productions in Ladakh, he added, would also provide a platform for local artists, technicians, and cultural ambassadors, nurturing homegrown talent within the entertainment industry.
Recalling the global impact of the iconic 2009 film 3 Idiots, which turned Pangong Lake into a tourist hotspot, Gupta remarked, “Cinematic exposure can transform Ladakh’s tourism sector and place it firmly on the international film-making map.”
He assured that the UT Administration is committed to extending all possible support to filmmakers, while preserving Ladakh’s ecological balance and cultural heritage.
Earlier, FTFL members put forth several demands, including an auditorium for film screenings, early framing of a UT Ladakh Film Policy, establishment of a Community Film Centre, and support for local filmmakers to showcase their work at national and international platforms.
During the day, the Lt Governor also met delegations from the Defence Institute of High-Altitude Research (DIHAR), Barsoo village, Raru (Zanskar), Junior Assistant aspirants from Kargil, and the All Ladakh Students Association Kashmir.
The delegations raised issues ranging from organic farming, solar energy, and mobile connectivity to road macadamisation, flood-related compensation, and employment concerns.
The Lt Governor, while giving a patient hearing, assured that the Administration would take every possible step to address the genuine concerns of all stakeholders.
