JAMMU: Students of the Allied & Healthcare Batch 2022–23 staged a peaceful protest outside Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu on Monday, demanding immediate commencement of their mandatory internship and clarity on the timeline for completing their degrees.
The students said the prolonged delay in starting the internship had extended their academic timeline, affecting their career plans and creating financial and professional uncertainty. They said a course they expected to complete within about three years and six months had now entered a fourth year, while the internship remained pending.
Carrying placards with messages including “Our Internship, Our Right — Start It Without Further Delay” and “Don’t Jeopardize Our Future”, the students sought intervention from the concerned authorities and a clear, written schedule for commencement of the internship.
The students said the internship was an essential part of their professional education and practical clinical training. According to them, the delay could affect their eligibility for employment, higher studies and competitive examinations where completion of the required course and internship is necessary. They also highlighted the additional living, travel and education-related expenses arising from the extended academic timeline.
Among their key demands are immediate commencement of the pending internship for eligible students, transparent communication on the administrative process, a time-bound schedule and clarity on the completion of internship and subsequent degree-related formalities.
The students said their protest was aimed at seeking a resolution through dialogue and appealed to the authorities to address the issue without further avoidable delay. They said their immediate priority was to complete the required practical training and move forward with their professional careers.
