Jul 10, 2025
NEW DELHI: In a major development for Ladakh, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has agreed to begin recruitment for Gazetted posts in the Union Territory, despite the lapse of the usual requisition deadline.
As per a statement, the decision in this regard was taken following a meeting between Ladakh's Chief Secretary Dr Pawan Kotwal and UPSC Secretary Shashi Ranjan in New Delhi. Senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ladakh's General Administration Department also attended the meeting.
The statement said acknowledging the long-pending need for officers in Ladakh, the UPSC has approved a special exception to start recruitment.
No Gazetted-level recruitment has taken place in the UT since October 2019, resulting in large vacancies in key departments.
The statement further said, in the first phase, recruitment will be held for 125 Medical Officers in the Health Department, 75 Lecturers in the School Education Department, and 32 Accounts Officers in the Finance Department. Other posts will be filled in subsequent phases.
The Chief Secretary of the UT, Dr Pawan Kotwal thanked the Commission for its swift response and for recognising the urgent need to strengthen Ladakh's administrative setup following the finalisation of the domicile and reservation rules.
