AIIMS Jammu launches neurosurgical services with successful brain tumor surgery

JAMMU: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jammu has launched its neurosurgical operative services.
Marking the beginning of this crucial specialty, the Department of Neurosurgery performed its first complex brain tumor surgery on July 2.
The patient, diagnosed with a left-sided glioma located near critical areas of the brain responsible for speech and motor functions, underwent a meticulously planned operation.
The surgical team, led by Dr Shaurya Darbari and Dr Kanav Gupta, achieved complete tumor removal using advanced technologies. Post-surgery, the patient retained full speech and motor abilities and is expected to be discharged shortly.
The success of this intricate procedure was made possible through seamless coordination with the Department of Radiology, led by Dr Gita Devi and Dr Ankit Prabhakar, who provided high-resolution imaging crucial for surgical navigation.
The Department of Anesthesiology, under Dr Sunana Gupta with support from Dr Slomi Gupta, Dr Raksha Kundal and Dr Kanika Gupta, ensured patient safety throughout the surgery and post-operative care.
Dr Shaurya Darbari, Head of Neurosurgery at AIIMS Jammu, highlighted the Institute's cutting-edge infrastructure, including neuronavigation, intraoperative ultrasound, neuromonitoring and advanced brain and spine surgical tools. "With the commencement of emergency neurosurgical services, patients will now receive critical care within the ‘golden hour,' potentially saving numerous lives," he said.
In addition to elective surgeries, the Department has also started emergency and trauma services to handle cranial and spinal emergencies, including accident-related injuries.
Prof (Dr) Shakti Gupta, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Jammu, termed the achievement as a "historic milestone," noting that patients previously had to travel to AIIMS Delhi or PGI Chandigarh for such care. "Now, residents of Jammu and surrounding areas have access to world-class neurosurgical facilities at their doorstep," he added.
