Stand united in fight against terrorism: PM Modi in talks with German Chancellor

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and exchanged views on regional and global developments, asserting the two countries stand united in the fight against terrorism.

Earlier this month, Conservative leader Friedrich Merz succeeded in becoming Germany's next chancellor.

"Spoke to Chancellor Friedrich Merz and congratulated him on assuming office. Reaffirmed our commitment to further strengthen the Strategic Partnership between India and Germany," Modi said in a post on X.

"Exchanged views on regional and global developments. We stand united in the fight against terrorism," he added.

In a statement later, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that during the telephone conversation, the two leaders "reiterated their shared commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms".

Noting the "excellent progress" in the India-Germany Strategic Partnership over the past 25 years, the two leaders agreed to "work closely to further strengthen bilateral ties, including in the areas of trade and investment, defence and security, and innovation and technology", it said.

Both leaders noted the "positive contribution" made by the Indian diaspora in Germany, the MEA said in its statement. It also said the two leaders exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.

Prime Minister Modi invited Chancellor Merz to visit India. The leaders agreed to remain in touch, the MEA added.
