Heritage School organises an engaging workshop on cyber security

JAMMU: Heritage School successfully conducted a compelling workshop on Cyber Security for students in grades VIII, IX, and XI on Monday.

The event featured Dr Rakshit Tandon, a distinguished Cyber Security Evangelist and National Expert, as the resource person.

The workshop aimed to educate students and faculty about the importance of safe digital practices in today's increasingly connected world. The event was graced by the presence of. Sunil Gupta, Chairman of Heritage School, Vishal Gupta, Member of the Board of Trustees, Principal Akash Pradhan, Vice Principal Rashmi Thakur, and Headmistress Vandana Jasrotia.

Dr. Tandon, with over two decades of experience, leads Risk Advisory and Cyber Detect & Respond at IAMAI and serves as the Director of HackDev Technology Pvt. Ltd. As a Cyber Consultant for CID Haryana Police, he has played a crucial role in training law enforcement officers and establishing cyber cells across various states.

His contributions extend to UNICEF's study on "Child Online Protection in India," and he is a faculty member at major police academies, including NIA and the Central Detective Training Institute. His international expertise is further recognized through his roles as a Non-EU Expert for the European Commission and a Training Consultant for UNODC.

During the workshop, Dr Tandon introduced the concept of a "digital diet," advocating for a balanced and mindful approach to digital consumption. He emphasized the need for students to be aware of the negative impacts of excessive use of social media platforms such as Snapchat, TikTok, and Instagram. Dr Tandon also highlighted the alarming rise in cyberbullying, blackmailing, and the toxic environments prevalent on these platforms.

Dr Tandon provided real-life examples of how social media misuse can lead to serious consequences, including cyber-crimes carried out by minors in India. He shared information on The IPC and IT Act, 2000, which cover cyber-crimes like hacking, identity theft, and cyberbullying, with applicable sections including Section 66 (hacking), Section 67 (obscene material), and Section 507 (criminal intimidation). Juveniles committing these crimes are prosecuted under the JJ Act, with punishments or reformative measures based on the specific offense.

Additionally, he discussed the grooming of young children on social media platforms and stressed the importance of parental vigilance.

The session also covered significant global actions, such as Florida's recent ban on social media for underage kids and Canada's lawsuit against social media giants for their role in these issues.

The workshop served as an eye-opener for many, reinforcing the need for a responsible and cautious approach to digital interactions. Heritage School remains committed to empowering its students with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the digital world safely.

During the event, Dr. Rakshit Tandon was honoured with a memento presented by the Chairman of Heritage School Jammu, Sunil Gupta.

The event concluded with a gracious vote of thanks delivered by the Principal, Akash Pradhan, who expressed heartfelt appreciation on behalf of the staff and students for Dr. Tandon's invaluable expertise and the knowledge he imparted.
