MIET organizes 2nd International Conference on Next Generation Computing

JAMMU: The Model Institute of Engineering and Technology (MIET) (Autonomous) successfully organized the 2nd International Conference on Next-Generation Computing and Information Systems, ICNGCIS'23, on the 18th and 19th December.

The highlight of the conference was the presence of four distinguished Computer Science Professors from the USA who delivered keynote addresses on day one of the conference.

Prof. Ankur Gupta, Director MIET, presented the welcome address and described the International Conference at MIET as a milestone in the development of the computer science research ecosystem in the state of J&K. He reiterated the commitment of MIET to develop high-quality research capabilities in computer science and IT with international mentoring and collaboration.

The conference attracted 112 paper submissions and 34 research papers were finally accepted, after a rigorous peer-review process, representing a 30% acceptance. The conference proceedings will be published by CRC Press, Taylor and Francis Group and indexed in Scopus database.

Prof. Sartaj Sahni, a globally recognized academician in computer science from the University of Florida, USA and a Fellow of the IEEE, ACM and AAAS, delivered the inaugural keynote address and spoke about fast reinforcement learning algorithms.

His session delved upon a light-weight clustering method and usage of annealing (slowly increasing convergence threshold for the algorithms) to achieve up to 6x speed-up in reinforcement learning algorithms.

The second keynote address was delivered by Prof. Sitharama Iyengar, from the Florida International University who is a recipient of 2023 Karnataka Rajyotsava Award (Karnataka State's 2nd Highest Civilian Award) and IEEE Cybermatics Congress "Test of Time Award '' for his work on creating the Brooks-Iyengar Algorithm.

He presented his thoughts on the future of AI and ML powered digital forensics with a focus on intelligent cybersecurity.

The third keynote address was delivered by Prof. Upendranath Sharma Chakravarthy from the University of Texas at Arlington who is also an ACM Distinguished Scientist and an ACM Distinguished Speaker.

He presented multiple innovative works from his Distributed Systems Lab including Autonomous Video Situation Monitoring allowing users to query for objects/incidents of interest in video streams in real-time and the innovative use of multi-layer networks for complex data analysis.

The final keynote address was delivered by Prof. Arif Sawat, Chaired Professor and Director of the FPL-FIU Solar Research Facility and Energy Power Sustainability (EPS) group at Florida International University.

He spoke about the impact of Artificial Intelligence on High-Penetration Renewable Physical Infrastructure. Prof. Sarwat's group received an over 850 million dollar grant for building an autonomous smart grid on the FIU campus using AI-integrated methods.

After each keynote address, the audience of over 250 faculty members, delegates from different universities, research scholars and students had rich interactions with the keynote speakers. The computer science community in the region celebrated the interaction with renowned global Professors in the field through the conference at MIET.

The second day of the conference witnessed four insightful paper presentation sessions by authors representing over 50 Universities and Institutions globally. The diverse range of accepted papers covered cutting-edge domains like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Internet of Things, Cybersecurity, Metaverse, Multimedia Processing, High-Performance Computing, Digital Twin, Remote Sensing, and Distributed Computing.

The event witnessed active engagement by researchers with domain experts and with each other, leading to meaningful collaborations in the region.

Other dignitaries present on the occasion included Prof. S.K Sharma, Prof. G.S Sambyal, Prof. Devanand, Prof. B.C Sharma, Prof. Sahil Sawhney, Prof. Ashok Kumar, Prof. Ajay Khajuria, and Prof. Babar Afzal.
